INFO
Hardwood windows are the ultimate in quality and durability. The types of hardwood which are used in our hardwood windows have closed, beautiful grain structures and unlike softwoods are naturally durable. Durability is an often misunderstood term when it comes to timber – when we mention durability we are not talking about how hardwearing it is, but how resistant it is to fungal rot and attack by insects. Wood-destroying insects are not a widespread problem in the UK, but rot certainly can be, due to our temperate climate and often harsh and wet weather. The hardwood timbers we use are considered to be “Class 2 – Durable”, meaning that you can expect your hardwood windows to last between 15 to 40 years if installed above the ground, even when unpainted and exposed to the weather. Redwood, which is probably the most commonly used timber for softwood windows in the UK is considered to be “Class 4 – Slightly Durable”, which gives it a life expectancy of 0 to 7 years if installed in the same conditions as above. Of course, these figures are for unpainted timbers, and painted timbers will last much longer, but this should give you some idea of the difference in natural durability between hardwoods and softwoods. Manufacturers attempt to overcome the low durability of softwoods by impregnating or coating the timbers with an anti-fungal preservative treatment, which increases the lifespan of the timbers. However, this treatment only ever penetrates a few millimetres into the surface of the timber, meaning that wherever the timber is screwed into or cut on-site after treatment, the protective treatment is compromised giving opportunities for rot to take hold. Once a window starts to rot, it can be difficult to repair in a cost-effective and visually pleasing way. Often the repairs involve cutting out rotten material and splicing in new timbers, which will always leave a visible joint between the old and new timbers. Especially when the separate pieces of timber expand or contract by different amounts when exposed to moisture or differences in ambient temperatures. Since hardwood timbers essentially produce and contain their own preservative compounds during growth, they are naturally durable and are protected through to the core even without preservative treatment. This means that screwing into or cutting the timbers after painting does not pose an inherent risk in terms of the continued durability of the products. On top of the timber’s natural durability, our hardwood windows are coated with the latest in microporous paints and stains which ensure that the windows will have a long-lasting, beautiful finish. Our range of translucent stains work to show off the beautiful grain of the hardwoods we use, this is something which really can’t be replicated with softwood timbers. Another benefit of hardwood timbers over softwood is that our hardwood windows are stronger than softwood windows when it comes to supporting loads in structures such as conservatories and orangeries. This is important because it allows us to use thinner timber components to achieve the same strength, and in some cases allows us to manufacture larger buildings before the introduction of additional reinforcing elements such as roof tie bars or in-built structural steels is required. If you are interested in our hardwood window products or would like a free quotation, please fill out our callback request form, or call us on 0333 335 5416.

REPLICATE WINDOWS
If you are looking to replicate an existing window style for your new hardwood windows then please give us a call on 0333 335 5416 to discuss your replica window requirements. Some historic windows can (depending on age) be hard to find parts for, or may well be beyond economical repair, at which point, replica windows are ideal to replace with a like for like style with new materials and parts.
