Timber Tilt and Turn Windows

What are tilt and turn windows?

Tilt and turn windows take inspiration from Scandinavian design, which focuses on minimalism and functionality. Their unique opening mechanism features two axes, enabling people to open them inwards from the top or side hinges - similar to traditional casement windows. As one of the most popular window types in the UK, tilt-and-turns allow fresh air into the property without compromising the safety of children—they can also serve as an emergency exit in a fire.

Our wooden tilt and turn windows

As tilt and turn window manufacturers, we use timber frames, combining functionality and style. The key characteristics of our windows include:
  • Dual functionality: These windows open from the top, ensuring children cannot get through them or from the side like a door for accessibility.
  • Security features: Most tilt and turn window designs have multiple locking points, ensuring convenience while protecting your property from intruders.
  • Accessibility: These windows focus on convenience, making them more popular than traditional casement window designs.

The benefits of tilt and turn window styles

There are many benefits of tilt and turn windows, and their contemporary design makes them ideal for any modern home. From longevity to durability and flexibility, investing in tilt and turn timber windows gives you years of stress-free usage.

Flexible ventilation

Most windows have a set opening mechanism, but you can look forward to seamless ventilation with tilt and turn styles. The window opens inwards and outwards, enabling you to customise them to your needs. Using the tilt function promotes safety, while the turn function can let more air into the room.

Safety and security

Families often sacrifice their comfort to protect children and pets, but tilt and turn windows provide secure ventilation. When in a tilt position, they still let air in while preventing children and pets from getting out of them. The unique design and locking points ensure increased security.

Energy efficiency

Installing tilt and turn windows can also reduce energy bills, as they have excellent thermal properties. The complex design means the windows must undergo an air-sealing process, keeping rooms cool in the summer and stopping heat from escaping during the winter.

Aesthetic appeal

Tilt and turn designs might be complex, but the windows themselves look fantastic in modern homes. Their unique features are ideal for timber frames, which add sophistication to the windows and come in various finishes.

The disadvantages of tilt and turn windows include

  • Affordability: Tilt and turn windows cost more than traditional casement or double-hung windows, but the price factors into the functionality.
  • Learning curve: Some people might find the windows take some getting used to because of their unique opening mechanisms. However, their complexity can be beneficial for homes with young children.
  • Security: Tilt and turn windows offer great home security, but leaving them open while tilted inwards could put your home at risk of break-ins.

Modern Tilt and Turn Window Styles

As manufacturers of high-quality tilt and turn windows, we use timber in all our designs. Why? Because it’s timeless, versatile and available in numerous finishes. Aluminium and uPVC windows have their benefits, but many people find they don’t compare to the natural beauty of timber.

Frequently Asked Questions

These windows use a dual opening mechanism through one handle. Turning the handle horizontally lets the window tilt open, but you can also open it from the side, similarly to a door. With the option to customise your ventilation, tilt and turn windows are designed to be flexible.

The handle mechanism allows you to open and customise the windows to your needs.

Using the tilt function:

  • Turn the handle to the side (typically at a 90-degree angle).
  • Push it downwards to activate the tilting mechanism.
  • The window will tilt inwards.

Using the turn function:

  • Turn the handle upwards vertically (typically at a 180-degree angle).
  • Pulling the handle towards you engages the turn function.
  • Close and lock the window by returning the handle to its natural position.

Our timber tilt and turn windows are highly durable, and adding double or triple glazing makes it harder for intruders to smash the glass. They also utilise a multi-point locking system that secures the entire frame for peace of mind.

These windows are highly secure, but leaving them tilted inwards while out or asleep could leave you vulnerable to crime.

While all three have benefits, tilt and turn windows are more functional than traditional sash and casement windows. They let you customise how much fresh air your property gets and have more security features.

You can find tilt and turn casement-style windows, but the unique opening mechanisms allow easy cleaning.

If you have a modern property, tilt and turn windows have clean lines and a minimalistic design, making them ideal for seamless style. However, it’s ultimately up to your preferences, and both casement and sash windows are still great choices.
