Timber bi-folding doors are multi-panel, hardwood door sets that fold and stack to one or both sides of an opening, creating a wide, unobstructed connection between your home and garden. Wood offers natural insulation, visual warmth and a character that aluminium or uPVC simply cannot replicate.

What are timber bi-folding doors?

A wooden bifold door system is made up of two or more hardwood panels, each hinged together and mounted on a top-hung or bottom-running track. When you open them, the panels concertina away to one side, or split and stack to both sides, leaving the full width of your aperture clear.

They are commonly used to replace a rear wall between a kitchen or living room and a garden, patio or decking area. The result is an open-plan feel that floods the interior with natural light and makes the space feel substantially larger.

At Windows & Doors UK, our bifold door sets are handcrafted in our own UK joinery using sustainably sourced hardwoods, including European Oak and Sapele. Every set is made to your exact measurements, so there are no compromises on fit, finish or performance.

Why choose a wooden bifold door over aluminium or uPVC?

Wood has been used in external joinery for centuries, and modern machining and treatment methods have addressed the historical concerns around warping and maintenance

The key advantage of wood is character. The grain, the warmth and the way hardwood takes a stain or solid paint colour gives a finished door a presence that synthetic materials cannot match. For period homes, listed buildings and barn conversions, a timber bifold door is often the only appropriate choice.

Our doors are manufactured from 100% hardwood for improved durability, finished in any solid colour including RAL, BS, Farrow & Ball and Dulux options, with a wide range of traditional or contemporary ironmongery.

Wooden bifold door configurations: how many panels do you need?

Panel count is one of the first decisions you will make. The right number depends on the width of your opening and how much clearance you want when the doors are stacked.

Standard configurations available from Windows & Doors UK:

  • 2 panel – suits narrower openings from around 1.2m; both panels fold to one side
  • 3 panel – popular for openings of 2.1m–2.7m; typically folds 2+1 or all to one side
  • 4 panel – one of the most requested sizes; can split 2+2 or stack 3+1
  • 5 and 6 panel – ideal for wide rear extensions; a split configuration (3+2 or 3+3) gives a central opening point
  • Up to 16 panels – our folding door sets can span up to 15 metres maximum overall width making them suitable for large new builds and commercial projects

Each panel can be up to 1 metre wide and 3 metres tall. For sets wider than around 5m, a split configuration is usually recommended because it distributes the stacked panel weight more evenly and makes the doors easier to operate day to day.

Opening direction, left-hand, right-hand or split, should be chosen based on where you want the traffic door (the single panel that opens without folding the full set) and where there is space to stack the panels.

Thermal performance of hardwood bifold doors

Energy efficiency is no longer optional. Under Approved Document L of the UK building regulations, replacement external doors must meet a maximum U-value of 1.4 W/m²K for the whole door unit (frame and glazing combined). Higher-specification glazing will reduce this figure further.

At Windows & Doors UK, our glazing units use soft-coat glass with argon gas filling and a Low-E coating as standard, alongside a thermal space bar and 28mm sealed units (4mm glass, 20mm air gap, 4mm toughened glass). This combination keeps heat inside the building and reduces condensation on the internal pane.

Our hardwood frames also benefit from the natural insulating properties of wood. Timber has a far lower thermal conductivity than aluminium, meaning the frame itself loses less heat without requiring a manufactured thermal break.

Security features on external wooden bifold doors

A common concern about bifold doors is security. The folding mechanism and large glass area lead some homeowners to assume they are less secure than a traditional door. A well-specified wooden bifold should address this directly.

At Windows & Doors UK, our folding door sets include:

  • Cylinder locks and drop bolts at the folding point and the meeting stile
  • The Winkhaus multi-point locking system used across our door range, with 3-point or 5-point hook options
  • Toughened safety glass as standard across all panels
  • High-quality compression gaskets that form an airtight seal when closed, removing flex and rattle that can indicate a weak point

The lock hardware is available in multiple finishes including polished chrome, satin chrome, polished brass and gloss black, so the security hardware also contributes to the overall aesthetic of the door.

How to clean wooden bifold doors

The track and hardware are the most maintenance-intensive parts of any bifold system. Here is a practical routine:

1. Track and rollers — brush out any debris monthly and apply a silicone-based lubricant to the rollers twice a year
2. Frame and panels — wipe down with a soft cloth and mild soapy water; avoid abrasive cleaners that strip the surface finish
3. Glass — clean with a standard glass cleaner; microfibre cloths avoid streaking
4. Seals and gaskets — inspect annually and replace if cracked or compressed flat; worn seals are the most common cause of draught and water ingress
5. Painted or stained surfaces — check for chips or bare patches and touch in with matching exterior paint to prevent moisture getting into the end grain
